A small town on the shores of Lake Zell, the resort of Zell am See is located in the heart of the province of Salzburg. There are around 9,700 year round inhabitants in this bustling pedestrianised town, which attracts visitors winter and summer.
This picturesque village sits by a lake, which is used for ice skating and curling during the colder months of the year. The are some spectacular views from the top of Schmitten Pfiff overlooking the lake, while the peaks of the glaciers stand proud in the distance. Although the ski terrain is best suited to beginners and intermediates, there are still some steep black runs and off-piste sites to satisfy advanced skiers and boarders.
There are more than twenty bars and discos in the Zell am See resort. It has everything from bustling party hangouts, to quiet sophisticated night spots for aprés ski. There are some good live music venues and a huge variety of restaurants to choose from. Zell am See has more than a hundred places to eat, including traditional Austrian fare, Chinese, Italian and French cuisines. The Steinerwirt restaurant comes highly recommended, and offers both an attractive terrace and a couple of cosy interior dining rooms. For drinks, try Schnapps Hans Ice Bar at the top of the cable car, or the Villa Crazy Daisy, one of the more popular spots in town. Besides the bar scene, the resort offers a cinema, a bowling alley, a toboggan run, night skiing, a swimming pool and ice skating, to name a few.
Zell am See has literally every type of accommodation possible from five star hotels to youth hostels and camping facilities. There are mountain inns, B&Bs, private rooms, apartments and chalets with catered and self-catering options. Salzburg is the closest airport at less than 90 minutes away and Munich airport is two hours and thirty minutes away.
