Choose a resort in France
France still remains one of the most popular destinations for European ski holidays. From the Northern to Southern Alps right across to the Pyrenees, France really has something to boast about. If you’re looking for vast glacier skiing, the Northern Alps, which are much higher, are the place to go – try Val d’Isère, Tignes and Les Deux Alpes. If, however, you prefer skiing in warmer weather on pretty, tree-lined slopes or visiting little-known traditional French ski resorts, the Southern Alps have plenty to offer.
The ski areas are also very varied in size and style and there really is something for every taste. The resorts of Le Grand Bornand and Puy St Vincent both have small ski areas making them an excellent choice for families with young children or beginners and will give you a real taste of the French way of life. If you’re looking for a challenge, the resorts of Les Les Ménuires, Meribel, Val Thorens and Courchevel which make up the 3 Valleys ski area (the largest in the world) allow you to ski or snowboard for miles without having to take another lift.
You can also enjoy cross-border skiing – having breakfast in France and lunch in Italy or Switzerland always makes a pleasant change!
France also has some of the best purpose-built resorts. These may not be the most attractive but you can’t beat them for convenience. If you’re looking for doorstep skiing then Les Arcs and Alpe d’Huez are still great favourites.
