Chamrousse 1750 - Roche Béranger
Known for hosting the 1968 winter Olympics, Chamrousse is a wonderful ski resort surrounded by majestic mountain scenery. Situated next to the town of Grenoble, Chamrousse is made up of the villages of Recoin at 1650m and Roche Béranger at 1750m. Its proximity to Grenoble and its airport ensures an abundance of weekend visitors. It has runs facing westerly and southwesterly directions guaranteeing a sun filled day on the slopes. The ski-lifts reach the Cross of Chamrousse at 2253m, where a vast panorama can be witnessed of the mountain groups of Oisans, Grandes Rousses and Taillefer.
The resort has over 90km of piste, much of which is below the tree line so those who enjoy skiing through the trees will have a fun time. The off-piste skiing is both plentiful and relatively safe so it is satisfactory for both beginners and experts. The area has loads to offer snowboarders with terrain parks such as the Sunset Park for free stylers and numerous steep trails.
For fun off the slopes, there is paragliding, snowshoe walks, snow-mobiling, ice skating, ice-diving beneath the lake, with a cinema and a sports hall to boot. There is a ski school, the Ecole du Ski Francais Chamrousse, for those novice skiers and anyone who just wishes to brush up on their technique. For that aprés ski time there are 25 bars and restaurants at the resort. The most lively being Gringo's or L'Embuscade though nightlife in general is fairly low key and most bars are empty by midnight. Of the two villages, Roche Beranger caters more to families while Le Recoin is more for those wanting a lively, animated atmosphere.
The resort offers plenty of accommodation options with self-catering chalets, catered apartments and hotels with many doorstep skiing facilities available. With its relaxed feel and closeness to the airport at Grenoble, Chamrousse is a great spot for a quick weekend getaway or for the longer winter break.
