The Chamonix valley is situated at the bottom of Mont-Blanc in the northwest part of the Alps. It is the highest summit in Europe at 4810m and sits just 15km away from the borders of both Italy and Switzerland. It is internationally recognized for its stunning scenery and it is registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Well known for mountaineering during the warmer months, Chamonix offers great skiing conditions in the winter season, which is quite long stretching from late November through to the beginning of May.
With most of the ski area located at 2000m and up, Chamonix is virtually guaranteed snow throughout the winter. There are five distinct sections within the resort with the famous Grands Montets area perfect for more advanced skiers, free-riders and snowboarders. It has some challenging off-piste sites included in the L'Aiguille du Midi area with its 22km off-piste descent through La Vallée Blanche. There are plenty of runs for beginners, intermediates and family skiing. Other activities at the resort include husky dog rides, snowshoeing, ice-climbing, parapenting, paragliding and heli-skiing.
The area offers a wide range of accommodation with self-catering and catered chalets, apartments, B&Bs and longer lets of a month or more. With so much on offer there are plenty of options for every budget. There are a lot of sights off the slopes that are worth a mention, visit La Mer de Glace glacier and its ice grotto or take the Aiguille du Midi Europe’s highest cable car at 3842m to view Mont Blanc.
For aprés ski, Chamonix has a wide selection of local cafés and pastry shops along with a tremendous amount of entertainment. With more than 80 restaurants, 14 bars, 7 discotheques and a world class casino, you will be spoilt for choice. Chamonix is just over an hour's drive from Geneva airport making it fantastic for weekend getaways or short family holidays.
