Besse Saint Anastaise
The ski resort of Besse Super Besse lies at altitudes ranging from 1050m up to 1830m in the Auvergne territory of the French Massif Central. In 1907 the first ski competitions were held and since then the resort has continued to grow and modernize. It has the largest ski terrain in Europe outside of the Alps.
Super Besse 1300m is a purpose-built resort, with a few unattractive high rise buildings, while the lower village at 1050m has retained its traditional mountain character. The main draws to the resort are skiing and boarding on extinct volcanoes, and the extensive cross-country trails on offer. There is good skiing for all levels but it is best suited to families and mixed level groups. For more challenging options, the Le Mont Dore area next door is a great spot for advanced skiers.
The après ski scene is generally relaxed and laid-back. Though there are some very good restaurants in town especially around the square, most stop serving food around 9.30pm, so it is a good idea to go early. Try out Le Slolam for drinks and snacks or the Le Flacon des Sel, and La Bergerie restaurants for food. All the usual amenities are available, such as shops, supermarkets and sports shops offering equipment rental. Another great activity to try is snowshoeing. There are some fantastic guided walks to parts of the volcanoes which cannot be reached on skis. Super Besse also has a not-to-be missed ski museum which catalogues the first skiing in the area and the history of the resort.
There are plenty of accommodation options with some ski-in ski-out facilities. Try the excellent Hôtel Le Clos which is situated on the outskirts of Besse. The nearest airport is Clermont Ferrand at a distance of 55km. When driving take the autoroute A75 and the Champeix exit. By train, the nearest TGV Station is at Clermont Ferrand. Super Besse is worth considering for anyone looking for a quiet, relaxed and inexpensive ski break without the crowds.
